Functional Movement Screen

What is the FMS?

The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a screening tool used to evaluate seven fundamental movement patterns in individuals with no current pain or musculoskeletal injuries. The FMS is not intended to diagnose orthopedic problems but rather to demonstrate opportunities for improved movement in individuals.

What are the advantages of screening?

The screen is designed to place an individual in extreme positions where movement deficits become noticeable if appropriate stability and mobility are not used. Even though individuals are performing an activity or sport at a high level, it has been observed that many of these same individuals are limited in fundamental movement. This leads to the use of compensatory movements in order to achieve or maintain the level of performance needed for the activity. The inefficient use of compensation during movement will lead to poor biomechanics that limit gains in performance and reduces the body’s ability to remain adaptable and durable against the risks involved in athletic activities or sports.

General Population and Athletes can both benefit from the Functional Movement Screen. Once screened, our fitness professionals apply movement principles based on the result of the screen to make programming decisions with precision and purpose.  Screen results provide valuable feedback throughout the training process to ensure we are meeting short and long-term movement goals for lifelong health and vitality.

The Functional Movement Screen is currently helping provide Movement Based Insights for Creating More Durable Soccer Players and Helping Tackle the Youth Athlete Epidemic.

How long does it take?

The screen can take as little as 10 minutes to complete.  After the screen, our fitness professionals will print a detailed report on their findings and provide you with a corrective strategy to help address any potential movement dysfunctions.
